Becoming a member of the crew is a serious commitment that must not be taken lightly.
As a member of the crew you will first and foremost be a representative of the Beacon of Hope Sailing Project and with that comes a lot of responsibility.
As a company and a brand, we expect all crew to behave as a role model to others and as an ambassador of our values.
To be a part of our crew requires a considerable time commitment.
Every crew member must be fully trained and have acrewed hundreds of hours of ‘sea time’ before embarking on the expedition. The crew must also commit time for promotional events and correspondence with followers.
As you can imagine, organising and executing an event of this scale costs a considerable amount of money, therefore, we require all participants to raise a small portion of their personal costs (training, board, kit and equipment).
We do not ask for a commitment bond from you to raise extra money, it is simply a way of ensuring you truly are committed to the completion of the project.
During your time with us training, promoting and participating in the event, there will be extended periods of time where contact with home simply isn't possible.
Internet connection and other home comforts such as TV will be very limited. Privacy and space aboard the vessel will be limited, however, W/C & wash facilities will be fully enclosed and you will have a small area for personal belongings, photos etc.
Water on the vessel has to be managed very carefully so showering every day or long showers is simply not an option.
Successful crew members will be fully aware of the incredible physical toll this expedition will take on their bodies. The key physical requirement for this event is stamina.
Crew members will constantly be active and burning thousands of calories a day.
Crew members will be exposed to the harshest elements, including 100 foot plus rogue waves, incredible heat, bitter cold and of course a lot of salt water so must be resilient and keep pushing physically.
Selecting crew members with strong, motivated and determined mentalities, is much more important than selecting a crew of super muscled and athletic machines.
As a crew member you will be responsible for the safety and well-being of yourself and your crew members. This means that all of your actions have a direct impact on the crew and the whole expedition. We do not expect perfection, no one can be happy all the time.
Every-single person will have their down days, but on those days you must still respect that you have responsibilities. Finally, as you can imagine, there is no where to get off in the middle of the ocean, so you must be fully committed to the expedition from the start.
If you feel you've got an inspirational story of adversity and you have the skills and attributes required to be a part of this event, we'd love to hear from you.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world, make lifelong friends and most importantly, have a significant impact on people's daily lives.
This expedition will open doors that you never thought possible, but in order to achieve that you must be mentally prepared, dedicated and 100% committed.
