The road to sailing around the world- How we will achieve our objectives

The complexities of sailing around the world, particularly in the wrong direction are immense. Traditionally, expeditions would run East to West With the prevailing winds and tides. However, by sailing West to East We have made this an immense challenge.

Although all of our sailors will embark on a lengthy and rigorous UKSA training course, some may have never sailed before their training. The crew will need to build up their sea hours over time in order to be classed as competent crew and learn how to operate together. It also takes time to develop and grow other key elements that influence the success of the event such as building the right shore support team, gaining support and creating awareness for the cause and practising for the main event. All of these factors take time to develop and implement- therefore we will firstly embark on a sailing expedition around the United Kingdom.

Proof of concept:

The purpose of this UK expedition is to prove the concept of the project. We must prove to the public and potential sponsors that what we set out to do is achievable and the impact it has will be worthwhile and measurable. By practising the event on a smaller scale, not only does it raise awareness for the main event; it gives the whole team the time to learn to work together as a cohesive and effective race team, whose ultimate goal as a competitive armature sporting team smash existing world records and make history.

Practice + Experience = Success:

This smaller expedition provides Beacon of Hope the time it needs to develop the skills of the crew and to build on its existing team of highly experienced engineers, sailing professionals, safety specialists, event organisers and so many more. It also provides us with time to test the capabilities of the vessel and implement any solutions or alterations to the vessel.

Engagement:

During the sail around Britain, we will engage with the public, listening to their stories and promoting sailing. Audience engagement is key to spreading the message and raising the funding required to undertake the main expedition. We will encourage people to follow the expedition on social media and other platforms but more importantly interact with the event, spread the message and share their experiences and stories.

Raise Awareness:

Raising awareness of the necessity of alternative methods of support such as sailing is a critical element of the project. Through the stories of our crew, we hope to inspire others to share their stories of adversity and examples of times where they have had hope in the face of adversity. We intend to create a supporting community that advocates for the provision of alternative support methods and works to support society in tackling issues such as mental health, disability, discrimination and diversity.

Financing:

A project of this scale and complexity requires a lot of initial financial support. This will come from sponsors and investors who truly believe in the power of sailing and team sports as well the message of hope in the face of adversity. To raise significant amounts of money is no easy task- however, we are confident that the social impact of the project has immeasurable value- supporting people in their darkest, most difficult moments.
