Supporting Generations to Come

What Happens Next

Upon our return from the round the world expedition, we wish to establish a residential centre from which we can provide structured sailing experiences, workshops and respite to individuals after a traumatic life episode. By providing structured sailing and water sport programs combined with educational workshops, we hope to allow people the time and space they need to reflect on their experiences, re-discover their confidence and independence, and learn new skills.

Sailing and watersports are at the core of everything that we do, based on our personal experiences combined with sailing the success of other sailing charities and the general opinion of anyone who has ever sailed, we truly believe that sailing has a significant impact on both mental and physical well-being. Our structured sailing experiences will be short adventures that will allow individuals to develop key skills and rediscover confidence and independence along with other valuable skills that they will take forward with them for the rest of their lives. As well as providing time to reflect on the adversities that they have overcome, our sailing opportunities provide an environment where individuals can socialise and relate to shared adversities in-turn creating a lasting support circle and community.

We want to offer as many people as possible a safe place, where individuals are able to interact with people who've been through similar experiences, make lifelong friends, creating a lasting community and support network. During a person's time with us, they will take part in workshops tackling issues relating to their experiences such as, mental health, fertility, managing life with a disability, managing finances after a challenging life episode and workshops that support people in their return to employment and education.

Once we are established, we intend to provide scholarships and bursaries encouraging people to get into the maritime industry & engineering as well as other skilled professions. By providing scholarships and training bursaries, we not only create a lasting impact on a person, we make an impact on the industry itself encouraging diversification of industries such as the maritime sector and create greater inclusion for people with disabilities or sufferers of long term illness and conditions.

We hope to educate employers and empower employees!

Many companies underestimate the value and potential of someone who has been through a challenging experience. These incredible individuals have often been through experiences and concurred challenges, where most people would have given up. Those who have triumphed over adversity often possess skill sets and attributes that can only be achieved through their experiences and therefore should be seen as highly valued assets to any business. Sadly, it is often the case that people who have a disability, or have been through a life changing episode are too often undervalued and under-appreciated or treated differently to other people. By educating employers and empowering employees, we will help people to get into work, and we provide employers with extremely dedicated staff.

More Expeditions

After we've completed our expedition, it is our fullest intention to enter other races and regattars with impaired and amateur race teams. This will boost the profile of Beacon of Hope Sailing Project and continue to encourage individuals who've been through a challenging time to take part in sailing or any other activities. Our goal at every race we enter will always be to provide inspiration and prove that anything is possible when you have hope in the face of adversity.

Sailing & Watersports Centre

"Participation in regular physical activity can increase self-esteem and reduce stress and anxiety. Physical activity can help play a role in preventing mental health problems and improve the quality of life of those experiencing it.

For example, there is an approximately 20–30% lower risk for depression and dementia, for adults participating in daily physical activity." - MentalHealth.org

The sail training centre will be used for much more than sailing and water sports. It will be the base of operations for BOH and all of its activities, programmes and workshops.

The centre will provide respite and possibly the first opportunity for many people to reflect on their experience, truly enjoy themselves and discover potential opportunities after their challenging experience.

The centre will provide a safe and secure place for people to take time, away from their everyday lives, giving them the opportunity to make new friends, talk about shared experiences, learn new skills and leave us as more confident, independent individuals.

Training Partnerships

Our training bursaries and scholarships provide individuals with a leg up into industries such as engineering and the maritime sector.

By providing scholarships, training and employment opportunities, we are showcasing the skills of people who've been through adverse experiences or live with a disability to employers and demonstrate how the skills and attributes these incredible people have acquired as a result of their experience have only added to their value as an employee.

Creating more diversity and inclusive workplaces is a major goal for the BOH and we will always work to improve the rights and opportunities for people living with a disability or individuals affected by a traumatic life episode.

Charity Integration

The Beacon of Hope Sailing Project will always work with and support our charity partners, whether that be in joint events, collaborations or by providing sailing opportunities to people they are currently supporting.

From the Teenage Cancer Trust to Help for Heroes, we are always willing to support people who have been or who are currently being supported by other charitable organisations. Our opportunities could be the final step a person needs to give new direction or perspective to a person's life.
